BART TO SAN JOSE EXTENSION
Bay Area Rapid Transit
The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Silicon Valley Extension is an approximately 16-mile extension of the existing BART system to the following cities: Milpitas, San Jose and Santa Clara. The Silicon Valley Extension will be implemented in phases with construction activities, for the first 10 miles, scheduled to begin in 2012. The 16-mile BART extension will begin from the BART terminal under construction at Warm Springs in the City of Fremont, continue alongside the Union Pacific Railroad through Milpitas, and end near the existing Caltrain Station in the City of Santa Clara. The proposed extension will improve overall transit service in these regions and address the anticipated growth over the next 20 years. It will better connect employees and residents with other rail transit systems such as: VTA Light Rail, Caltrain, Altamont Commuter Express, Capitol Corridor Intercity Rail Service, Amtrak and the proposed California High-Speed Rail. The extension will be implemented in multiple phases. The Silicon Valley Berryessa Extension (SVBX) Project, an approximately 10-mile extension, will be implemented first and is scheduled for revenue operations in 2020.
The construction schedule for the implementation of Silicon Valley Santa Clara Extension (SVSX) Project, an approximately 6-mile extension including about 5-miles of the alignment in tunnel under downtown San Jose, is to be determined.
